Portland Slag Cement (PSC)

Portland Slag cement is produced by either grinding the Portland clinker with gypsum and granulated slag or blending the ground granulated blast furnace slag (GGBS) with Ordinary Portland cement.

Composition of PSC cement
·
-> It is produced with a combination of 45-50% clinker, 45-50% blast furnace granulated Slag and 3-5% of gypsum.
·         -> Application of PSC cement
·         -> It is used in pre-cast concrete like pipe and block. Also used in structures like retaining wall, rivers, ports, tunnel etc.
·        ->  It is used in ready mix plants also.

Advantages of PSC Cement
·
->It is gives low initial strength but gained equal or sometimes higher strength in higher ultimate strength.
·         ->It has low risk in alkali-silica reaction with aggregates and good resistance from sulphate and chloride attacks.
·         -->Due to its fineness it increase durability and reduced permeability.
·        -> This cement is also cost effective compared to OPC.
·         ->It has more initial setting time and slump retention as it has slow heat of hydration.
·         ->By using PSC, we can get high workability and low bleeding as it has capacity to fill pores efficiently because it is grounded finely.
·         ->As compared to other cement this cement colour obtained is lighter as the colour of GGBFS is white.
·         ->Where thermal cracking is the concern, we can used PSC cement as it has low heat of hydration.

Disadvantages of PSC cement
·
-> It has low initial strength hence it can not be used in RCC work.
·         -> It can not be used in repair and emergency work as it has high initial setting time.
